The Foundation: What Stats Actually Tell You
I used to think goals were everything. (Spoiler: they’re not.)
Goals and assists measure direct offensive output. That’s it. A tap-in counts the same as a breakaway deke.
An empty-netter counts the same as a game-winner with 0.3 seconds left. You already know this. So why do we still rank players by points alone?
Assists have the same problem. A lucky deflection gets the same credit as a perfect saucer pass through three sticks.
Plus/Minus (+/-) is even messier. It’s just: you were on the ice for an even-strength goal for, plus one. You were on the ice for an even-strength goal against, minus one.
It sounds simple. It isn’t. A goalie who gives up soft goals tanks your +/- no matter how well you play.
A star center dragging you up three spots in the lineup inflates it. Whether you contributed or not.
That’s why I stopped using +/- as a standalone metric. (I still glance at it. But only to ask questions.)
Why is this player’s +/- +22 when they have 14 points? Are they hiding on defense? Are they getting buried in tough minutes?
Or are they just wildly underrated?

If your team shoots more than the other team while a player is on the ice (that’s) control. That’s momentum. That’s where chances are born.
So track Shot Attempts For vs. Against. Just write down every shot attempt (on) goal, wide, blocked.
No app needed. A notepad works. So does your phone’s notes app.
For both sides while that player is out there.
(Yes, even the one with 47 grocery lists.)
Say Player X goes out for two minutes. Their team fires 3 shots. Opponents get 1.
Their ratio is +2.
That’s not fluff. That’s possession use.
Now flip it: Turnover/Takeaway Ratio.
Every time Player X loses the puck. That’s a turnover. Every time they steal it (that’s) a takeaway.
A positive ratio means they create more possessions than they surrender.
That’s reliability. That’s defensive skill. That’s why coaches trust them in tight spots.
Scorers get cheers. Players who win puck battles and hold the line? They win games.
You don’t need fancy sensors or AI overlays to see this.
I’ve tracked it live at junior games. At college rinks. Even my cousin’s beer league (they let me sit behind the bench.

The best players aren’t always the flashiest. They’re the ones who tilt the ice before the shot even leaves the stick.
